Highway
04:32
|
|||
drivin' down a highway in southern arkansas
thinking 'how many miles on this road before you're gone?'
the sun is escaping me, but you're keeping pace
even though i'm at least a thousand miles from our place.
i look at all the sights, things i've never seen before
and all i can think is, 'how many days more?'
a beautiful lake, and i'm inspired by the view,
but all i wanna do is describe it to you
i thought, 'if i got away,
i might notice i was trapped,
but now the only place
i wanna go is back.'
and the miles aren't getting any shorter
there's still 24 hours in a day
and you're not getting any closer
and i'm counting down the miles on this long highway.
i spent years making plans to leave
only to find a hundred other people just like me
we're all standing around thinking we should all go home
take a little more vacation from our little time alone
i swear i wasn't like this i could go away for weeks
i could leave everything behind, never call, never blink
but i'm missing you now, and i think that's okay
what's happened to me? what's happened to me?
i wanted to escape
to get you out of my head
but here i am making room
for your absence in my bed
and the miles aren't getting any shorter
there's still 24 hours in a day
and you're not getting any closer
and i'm counting down the miles on this long highway.
they say to gather rosebuds while ye may
i've picked enough for a hundred bouquets
but time's not slowing down and i don't want it to slow down
if you're not gonna be around me
and the miles aren't getting any shorter
there's still 24 hours in a day
and you're not getting any closer
and i'm counting down the miles on this long highway.

Secrets
04:31
|
|||
it's getting hot inside my head, i try to take control
feels like what's missing ain't the button, but the hole
and i just can't figure out what's bothering me so
is it all in my mind?
you change the subject, wish my eyes were as glazed
or at least that this was just some stupid phase
no i don't think you're stealing, we just think alike these days
but you act on it first
you just keep your secrets, i'll hold on to mine
it's too bad we can't make it work
too bad we won't even try
i say it's just our ego
really it's just mine
you keep your secrets and i will keep mine
so does this mean we're gonna have to do without
each other's minds 'cause i have my doubts
please don't ask that awful question,
"what are you thinking about?"
well i wish i could tell you.
you just keep your secrets, i'll hold on to mine
it's too bad we can't make it work
too bad we won't even try
i say it's just our ego
really it's just mine
you keep your secrets and i will keep mine
i wish i weren't jealous of the way you use your words
i'd rather not be just some other mockingbird
and i wish i could excuse myself to another avenue
'cause i wanna be your muse, but i wanna create too.
it's a sad conclusion, doesn't quite make sense
if we're gonna build a partnership, how can we build a fence
but i've got to tell you, babe, in my defense,
i can't tell you a thing.
you just keep your secrets, i'll hold on to mine
it's too bad we can't make it work
too bad we won't even try
i say it's just our ego
really it's just mine
you keep your secrets and i will keep mine

Future Mr. Used-to-Be
03:34
|
|||
i've got a new boy, i gotta tell you about
he's not my type at all
nothing like any of the others i've had
but i'm having myself a ball
it's time i had a little something different
i'm trying to find a whole new theme
it probably won't last, so i'm moving fast
he's my future mr. used-to-be
he's my future mr used-to-be
it's time i started thinking about me
he's nice to me, but more than that
we look great together in photographs
and he's just my future mr. used-to-be
he ain't that smart, but i don't care
he's got really really really really really great hair
he's got a good car, never shows up late,
brings me flowers just about every day
so he don't have a job and he lives with his mum
but he works out every day, you should see his bum
for once let me think of my own needs
and my future mr. used-to-be
he's my future mr. used-to-be
it's time i started thinking about me
so he's nice to me, he's genuine
okay, so he's republican
but he's just my future mr. used-to-be
(solo)
he's my future mr. used-to-be
it's time i started thinking about me
so he's weak of mind, but his body's strong
and it's not like he'll be around that long
he's just my future mr. used-to-be

Ballad of Motorcycle Joe
04:40
|
|||
has anyone here seen my bike?
they stole it last saturday night
late model softtail classic
a few dents on the left side of the gas tank
has anyone seen my bike?
late one night in early march, stars clear in the sky
the band played the music, my friend at the bar
asking for a double rocket-rye
sorry pal, you know we don't serve that here
quit askin, i'm tired of your antics
a grin and a grumble, not quite sure what he said
from behind those dark sunglasses
slainte, cheers, i drink to your health
you drank to mine
slainte, cheers, i drink to your health with a
double rocket-rye.
another sunday night, and i'm up on the stage
playing to a few folks i know
a familiar voice from the back of the room yells
"play 'ode to billie joe'"
sorry pal, you know i don't know the words
quit askin, i'll learn them sometime
for now, sit back, i'll play something else
didn't you say that you liked patsy cline?
thought i heard you say you liked patsy cline.
slainte, cheers, i drink to your health
you drank to mine
slainte, cheers, i drink to your health with a
double rocket-rye.
oh please won't you come for a ride with me today
i won't tell your dad
look i've even brought you some shades, there's no need to be scared.
my old violin it is missing a string
could you bring me one please
the top one, the high one, i think it's an "e"
i need you to bring me a string
well i brought you a string for that old violin
and here's your rocket rye
and i learned all the words to 'ode to billie joe'
but i can't seem to find your bike.
has anyone here seen my bike?
they stole it last saturday night
late model softtail classic
a few dents on the left side of the gas tank
has anyone seen my bike?
could you tell me have you seen my bike?

Brown Liquor
04:02
|
|||
i know i should know better
i know i should get out of this place
when i watch you from across the room
and i see you there
i know there must be another way
i know exactly what is good for m
and i know what i should not have
and i know you're reputation
and i know that what you'll do to me i just can't have
you're a tall drink of whisky and
brown liquor gets me down
and i want you to resist me
but i'll let you throw me 'round
and feel that sweet intoxication
i know you will consume me
probably i'll like it
so go ahead and use me.
i just wanna be alone
but i like to have you near
i want you to step right in on cue
and put those big strong arms all around
you're a tall drink of whisky and
brown liquor gets me down
and i want you to resist me
but i'll let you throw me 'round
and feel that sweet intoxication
i know you will consume me
probably i'll like it
so go ahead and use me.
so go ahead and use me. use me.
i can only handle a shot of you
a single from the well
but you're a double on the rocks
you make every day a living hell
take me away from here
'cause i'm dying for
one chance to see things clear
you're a tall drink of whisky and
brown liquor gets me down
and i want you to resist me
but i'll let you throw me 'round
and feel that sweet intoxication
i know you will consume me
probably i'll like it
so go ahead and use me.
go ahead and use me.
go ahead abuse me.

Whisky in the Faucet
02:57
|
|||
woke up this morning like i do in every song
i went to brush my teeth and saw that there was something wrong
that ain't water in the drain and let me tell y'all
that something that i smelled there
was pure grain alcohol
there's whisky in the faucet, oh man i thought i'd lost it
with that amber water flowing drop by drop
so grab a mason jar 'cause it's time to stock the bar
oh lord oh please don't ever let it stop.
i ran into the kitchen just as fast as i could go
i checked the sink in there to see if it had the whisky flow
much to my surprise it was flowing like a fountain
this must be what they mean by the big rock candy mountain
i called my friends to spread the news
before ten minutes passed
folks i didn't even know were holding up a glass
wild turkey, jameson's, jack and jim and bushmill's
i didn't care how much they drank, my landlord pays the bills
now me and all my friends we just party until dark
'cause there ain't a chance in hell that we'll run out of maker's mark
the only problem i can see that makes things slightly tricky
you can't take a bath to hide the smell when the pipes are flowin' whisky.

Delaware
04:12
|
|||
haven't heard from you lately
i don't mean to be bothering you
people ask how you're doing
can't admit that i haven't a clue
i'm sure you've just been real busy
the city and all its bright lights
i know they're much more exciting
than our dull country nights
the piano stopped drinking
soon after you went away
and chatty old cathy
ran out of things to say
but george is still crossing the delaware
billie's still singing the blues
lisa's still smiling her own special smile
and i'm still here waiting for you
things here have been, well, slow
sue had her baby last june
i just wanna make sure that you know
that i'm so proud of you
the piano stopped drinking
soon after you went away
and chatty old cathy
ran out of things to say
but george is still crossing the delaware
billie's still singing the blues
lisa's still smiling her own special smile
and i'm still here waiting for you

Big Ol' House
02:53
|
|||
big ol house, four suv's,
three point two kids with a social disease
one dog with 48 fleas,
adds up to nothing at all
i'm on marriage number 3 and a half
this one's nice but he looks a giraffe
i was looking for love, settled for a laugh
now i got nothing at all
i've got nothing at all and he's got nothing but you
and probably you've got nothing too
but that's all right we'll be okay
i wouldn't have it any other way
walking down 14th street
in my 300 dollar shoes
tossing 25 cents
to a man singing 12 bar blues
i've seen 4 oceans and 7 seas
and i'm proud to drink 6 dollar coffees
i can't do the math without a machine
but they say i got nothing at all
i've got nothing at all and he's got nothing but you
and probably you've got nothing too
but that's all right we'll be okay
i wouldn't have it any other way

the days are getting longer and the nights a bit more wild
and suddenly i'm thinking how i'm really not a child
i've been good for so damn long and now that i'm alone
my moral slide is slippin down the road
the winter it's been long and dark and invariably cold
it's about time that i spread my mind and was a bit more bold
i think that i'll try something new snce i'm no longer bound
i think this summer all i'm gonna do is sleep around.
i'm not in the mood for any chocolates or flowers
don't ask me to stay i'm gonna leave within the hour
don't think that you'll get my number
i ain't gonna call
i don't want just one of you, i want you all.
used to me that i could only handle one
but times have changed think i'm allowed to have a bit more fun
maybe i'll call an old boyfriend to please my libido
maybe i'll find someone new and we'll go incognito
and i'll find a mat, a jon, a pat, a howie, or a ben
or maybe i'll find some swedish guy who'll let me call him sven
after all this is a pretty big freakin down
so why the hell should i not just sleep around.
i'm not in the mood for any chocolates or flowers
don't ask me to stay i'm gonna leave within the hour
don't think that you'll get my number
i ain't gonna call
i don't want just one of you, i want you all.
well i'm a maladjusted girl i've just been kinda bored
i'm sick of being loved and i don't wanna be adored
i guess that someone threw my heart into the lost and found
and since i've got no time to look, i guess that i'll just sleep around.
i'm not in the mood for any chocolates or flowers
don't ask me to stay i'm gonna leave within the hour
don't think that you'll get my number
i ain't gonna call
i don't want just one of you, i want you all.
maybe when the clocks roll back i'll fall to my old ways
and sit around frustrated thinking of recent days
but till that time i think that i'll just keep on going down
to the bars cause why should i not sleep around?
i'm not in the mood for any chocolates or flowers
don't ask me to stay i'm gonna leave within the hour
don't think that you'll get my number
i ain't gonna call
i don't want just one of you, i want you all.

You've read her blog, heard her on the BBC and on NPR's "A Prairie Home Companion," seen her play accordion with Elvis Costello, and laughed and cried at her original alt-country cabaret songs.
